THE HERMITAGE is the largesfc museum in the Soviet Union. Its remarkable collections of painting, sculpture, graphic and applied arts, weapons, coins and archaeological artefacts offer an illuminating insight into the principal stages in the development of world culture from ancient times to the twentieth century. The Museum's picture gallery, vvhose foundations were laid in 1764, is world-renowned. In the first decades of its existence there was a rapid increase in the number of paintings housed here. This was the result of purchases of both single works and whole collections. The most significant among the latler were the acquisitions in 1769 of the Saxon minister Count Brühl's collection, the Crozat collection in Paris in 1772, and of Lord Walpole's gallery in Houghton Hall, England, in 1778. By 1774 the Hermitage had in its possession 2,000 pictures. Towards the end of the eighteenth century the Hermitage picture gallery had accrued a rich collection of seventeenth century Flemish and Dutch paintings, including masterpieces by Rubens, Van Dyck, Rembrandt and Hals, and an equally representative collection of Italian and French paintings of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Access to the Hermitage collections, however, was limited to a handful of courtiers. In 1805 the Hermitage was elevated to the status of imperial museum, administered by the court. Meanwhile, its collections continued to grow: the gallery of Empress Josephine's Maimaison Castle was purchased in 1815, a collection of Spanish paintings was put together, and in 1850 several Titians were bought at the Barbarigo Palace in Venice. In the second half of the nineteenth century the Hermitage received two masterpieces: The Litta Madonna by Leonardo da Vinci and The Conestabile Madonna by Raphael. Acquired in the early 1900s were a number of works by fifteenth century Italian masters, including Leonardo's The Benois Madonna, several eighteenth century English portraits, and the large collection of seventeenth century Dutch paintings formerly owned by P. Semionov-TienShansky. The October Revolution of 1917 transferred ownership of the Hermitage treasures into the hands of the people. The Museum's collections were significantly enlarged and new departments were established: The History of the Culture of the East, The History
