The first recorded landing by white men on the eastern coast of Australia was on 29 April 1770. It was Captain lames Cook who sailed into the bay where botanists found a collection of plants so totally new to science that Cook gave the place the name of Botany Bay. Sailing northwards on the 6 May he observed and named a narrow opening Port lackson, but failed to see what is now the beautiful harbour of Sydney. It was not until 26 January 1788 that Captain Arthur Phillip landed at Sydney Cove with 1,030 men, women and children crammed into the eleven ships of the First Fleet.Widely acknowledged as one of the most beautiful cities in the world, Sydney owes much to the deep-water harbour formed by the junction of the Parramatta and Lane Cove Rivers. North and South Heads guard the entrance to deep inlets and coves, popular for all water sports. Leisurely harbour tours are another way of enjoying the scenery.Sydney boasts one of the largest single-span steel arched girder bridges in the world. The renowned Opera House on Bennelong Point is a tribute to designer l0rn Utzon's genius. These architectural masterpieces frame the city's dramatic skyline.Sydney has many other exciting prospects to be explored. Over the past few decades, the flow of migrants with their different cultures and the spate of modern development have overlaid Sydney with an exciting, cosmopolitan spirit. There are art galleries, exotic restaurants, theatres, nightclubs, symphony, jazz and rock concerts, pubs and bistros.Nestled amongst the modern skyscrapers and high-rise apartments there are frecjuent reminders of Sydney's past, the most famous being "The Rocks", Sydney's oldest area. Here and elsewhere many superb colonial cottages, terraces and warehouses have been restored to provide modern facilities while preserving the underlying historical atmosphere that is an integral part of Sydney's charm.
