introduction:The Toronto Carrying-Place is a 28-mile trail which has linked Lake Ontario to Lake Huron for the past 5,000 years. Etienne Brule is credited with being the first European to portage the trail to the mouth of the Humber River. This charming rascal of a Frenchman was a coureur-de-bois par excellence with few of the refinements of gende breeding. He made his historic trip in September 1615 in the company of twelve Huron guides and opened up the endre Great Lakes region for European traders.By 1720 compedtion among the French, Enghsh and Dutch traders was fierce. To tighten their control on the region, the French built a small trading post on the banks of the Humber. Toronto was little more than an offshoot of the French stronghold at Niagara, but it was sufficient to play havoc with the English fur trade. In 1726 the English responded with a fortified stone house at Oswego on the southern shores of the lake. True to their best shopkeeping traditions, and with the aid of liberal incentives to the Indians in the form of eau-de-vie and rum, the Enghsh successfully bankrupted the Toronto trading post.By 1750 the outraged French had decided to throw some of their more moralistic principles to the wind and adopt enemy tactics. Fort Toronto replaced the trading post and its armaments included a substantial supply of brandy and rum. Business was brisk. To keep it so, a third fort was built at a location now within the grounds of Exhibition Park. Fort Rouille would probably have shown a tidy profit had it not been put to the torch by its owners following the overthrow of Niagara in 1759 and the effective end of French rule in Toronto.Apart from being located at the foot of a strategic trade and communication corridor, Toronto was blessed with a fine, natural harbour, the result of glacial deposits and wave and current action. In 1793, therefore, Toronto was chosen by Lord Dorchester, Governor General of Canada, and Lieutenant Governor John Graves Simcoe as the site of an "impregnable fortress" and naval arsenal for the defence of Upper Canada. Three weeks after Simcoe arrived, he renamed the settlement York.Life was hard for the York pioneers. The streets were impassable after rain; marshy bogs at the mouth of the Don bred disease; wolves and bears raided the centre of town in times of hunger; winter was long, communication difficult; and insults continued to fly in a constant stream from Niagara and Kingston. It is true that Toronto later earned its reputa-
