INTRODUCTION We in the United States are only beginning to appreciate the richness and variety of the literature Latin America* has produced since 1900. Few of us, apart from specialists in the field, were familiar with even the major works of Latin American writers until recently, and the occasional curious reader was discouraged by the scarcity of translations into English. Even the Spanish language departments in the universities continue to focus their attention on Spain, although in this century the writing of Latin America has been far more vigorous. This state of affairs has begun to change in the past decade; perhaps the turning point came with the 1970 publication here in translation (three years after its appearance in Buenos Aires) of Gabriel Garcia Márquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude. Critics, admiring the novel's brilliance and vitality, speculated that the future direction that fiction might take was perhaps being determined in Latin America. And the success of the book, both hardbound and paperback, has encouraged more publishers in this country to look for other Latin American works to offer to an increasingly interested public.** Latin American writers whose importance had been recognized in their * By Latin American I mean all of the countries of South and Central America, Mexico, and the non-English-speaking islands of the Caribbean.
