Aerial Views A photograph makes history—the Earth as a coloured marble seen from the moon, as beautiful certainly as we could wish but could hardly have expected. It makes one wonder why this photograph is not hanging over everyone's sofa— instead of in just a few students' rooms. It was after all the first authentic picture of our whole planet, manifest evidence that we exist and what we look like. We have no need to be ashamed to show ourselves—but to whom? Is anybody there? Shall we draw our curtains—or shall we succeed in understanding and accepting our role as inhabitants of one of a thousand million heavenly bodies? Aerial photographs build a bridge for us to see ourselves from outside. This is unusual. We live at home—in a town—we go into a wood—we experience the world from its surface not from above. Aerial photographs make height appear as a new dimension. They make the familiar look strange. They teach us to see familiar things in a new way, as if for the first time. The photographs—excepting those of Austria which are taken by Dr.Lothar Beckel—were taken at the instigation of the Luft-Hansa Air Line to obtain material for publicity purposes. The object was to present scenes from a new view-point. Subjects were not chosen with the idea of producing a comprehensive geographical survey; decisive in this case was only what appeared exceptional and unique at any given moment during a flight. The list makes no claim to be complete, thus the fact that some European countries are not represented is not relevant. Otl Aicher spent two hundred flight hours taking aerial photographs of Europe with a remodelled Swedish 6x6 camera, the same that was used by the NASA astronauts on the moon. »Aerial pictures have a peculiar characteristic,« he said, »it is not a question whith them of the usual composition of foreground, middle and background like the traditional scene in classical drama. They reproduce something seen on from the earth's surface, registering them impartially«. One is tempted to play an intellectual game with Aicher's photo-graphical pictures, extracting from the contents what is particular in order to arrive at the general. Thus, the particular case of a drawbridge gives us the general concept of communication—a castle, architecture—a field of flowers, agriculture—a town, urbanization—to give a few examples. Human Settlements Organic life, seen through a microscope, begins with the cell. It develops an outer covering, as hard as necessary to protect itself and as loose-textured as necessary to interchange with other cells. The more advanced the organism, the more numerous are the cells, the more specialized in their functions and the stronger the surrounding membrane. Cells reproduce by dividing, the offspring arranging themselves in lines or rings, choosing the one or the other form in order to adapt themselves most advantageously to their environment. Human life, seen from above, acts in a surprisingly similar way. Wherever man finds fertile soil, he settles. The shape
