Explicit erotica, often called Hard Pornography, is considered by most Judges to be damaging, and its possession, production, or distribution is a crime in most societies. Yet the line between soft and hard is an obscure and mobile one - in all societies, in all time.A consideration of the etymology of the word pornography is most revealing. In the classical sense, pornography is strictly the depiction of the activities of prostitutes and their customers. That we have broadened the usage of this word to cover almost all forms of graphic sexual communication tells one a lot about the moral drift of writers, educators, and jounalists who ultimately determine usage. This manifestation of linguistic prudery is seen in its terminal phase in the form of legislation and legalistic jargon. In every instance legislation invariably relegates judgement to the personnal value judgements of the Judge or Jury charged with enforcement. Terms like offensive, indecent, obscene or expressions such as likely to arouse or likely to incite are so imprecise as to actually give a Judge or Juror license to transform his/her personal moral disposition (on that particular day) into legal precedent. This is not right. This is not fair.Dictionaries define obscene as offensive to ((modesty or decency, offensive to the senses or the mind.
