Despite the natural protection of the surrounding Carpathian Mountains, the eastern half of Central Europe was for thousands of years the 'great highway' of peoples and tribes. The Romans were the first to create a civilization in this area. The Román province of Pannónia, which existed for 400 years, was swept away by the 500 years of the Great Migrations. The towns, the amphitheatres, the villás, the fortresses guarding the limes, the Danube boundary of Román power, were almost completely destroyed. The first Christian churches of the Slavs-who settled west of the Danube in the 9th century-were destroyed during the period of the Hungárián Conquest and settlement (896-900). The creations of both the Romans and the Slavs did, however, play a decisive role in the life of the Magyars (Hungarians) who were in the process of converting to Christianity at that time.
