Preface
Humanity marches on at a rapidly advancing rhythm, and reference works intended to serve it, such as this dictionary, should keep in step with progress if they are to provide satisfactorily the information sought. That is why the Velázquez Dictionary, recognized throughout the world as the highest authority in bilingual Spanish-English dictionaries, needs to keep pace with all the new terms which the prodigious progress of man is introducing in the fields of science, inventions and discoveries, as well as with those terms which constantly evolving customs and events introduce into both languages.
Thus the new revised Velázquez dictionaey, without sacrificing any of the traditional characteristics which have made predecessor editions the pattern for dictionaries of this type, is without doubt the most modern and complete edition of the work ever published. Included in the main alphabetical word lists are thousands of new terms and idiomatic expressions of general use, replacing expressions no longer in common usage which consequently have no place in a book as eminently practical as this one.
This latest revision of the text has been exhaustive. The aim has been to have the Velázquez Dictionary respond more efficiently each day to the needs of those consulting it as a practical medium to solve their translation problems in the fields of business, of current events, of technology, of science in general, of literature, etc. At the same time particular attention has been paid to the terms and idioms commonly used in Spanish America and in the United States, since commercial and friendly relations between these two great regions of the modern world are daily becoming more frequent and important.
The equivalents of geographical names and adjectives which are not written identically in Spanish and English have been meticulously revised. The lists making up the present edition include all the changes which such names have undergone through recent historical events.
A similar study has been made of the lists of proper names appearing in the supplements of the book, as well as those of weights and measures. The list of abbreviations has been brought up to date so that it may also respond to the fundamentally practical nature of the book.
