When Maud returned to her room, she saw a man emerge from her wardrobe. Dressed in pyjamas and wearing a smart green lampshade on his head, the stranger beamed a friendly smile at her. "Excuse me," he said, politely raising the lampshade. "My name is Félix Van der Gullen." Having recovered from her shock, Maud backed towards the door. The stranger must clearly be mad. "What are you doing here," she inquired of the intruder. "What business had you in my wardrobe?" "Please don't shout," said the lunatic stranger. "If you do you11 bring about the downfall of a good-natured, cheerful fellow, who is about to leave these premises anyway." "What were you doing in my wardrobe," Maud said once again, demanding a clear answer. "I - I just happened to walk into it." "How did you get into my room?" "Oh, I entered through the window early this morning. You see, I happened to be on the run, and out there, in the deserted garden of the hotel, I spotted this open window. So I hoisted myself onto the windowsill, and peeked in. Seeing that the bed was unoccupied, I hopped in and hid in the wardrobe. I was nervous and excited, you see, so in that flustered state I... well, I feli into a deep sleep... I woke up just a moment ago. While in there, I seem to have torn the loop of a sports jacket. I apologize." As Maud made no reply, the stranger removed the lampshade that had fallen onto his head in the wardrobe, and placed it gingerly on the table. He made a bow and started for the door. "Stop light there," Maud cried. "As you wish," said the mad stranger, halting in his track. Are you out of your mind? What do you mean leaving my room elad in pyjamas?" The stranger submissively made for the window. "No," Maud cried out at a high pitch that just stopped short of a seream.
