Studies of the Structure of Economists' Salaries and Income [antikvár]

PREFACE Each of the four studies published herein grew out of a distinctive question regarding the employment and compensation of American economists: Study I began with the question as to how economists' total professional incomes differed from their basic salaries and thus what total relationships might be found between basic salaries and supplemental professional incomes. Study II began with the question of whether economists are really paid higher salaries than those of any of the other National Register professions, or whether their top median salary was the result of interprofessional differences in personal and employment characteristics. Study III began with the question as to current changes in the levels and structure of economists' salaries and in the strength of the factors which had previously been found to influence these salaries. Study IV began with the question as to how greatly the size and average salary of the economics profession was affected by the particular Register classification. Question I was raised by the authors of these studies, as a result of their work on the 1964 data for the American Economic Association Committee which prepared the first report. Questions II and IV were raised by the Committee which published the first comprehensive report on economists' salaries {American Economic Review Supplement, December 1965, pp. 9-10). Question III arose as soon as it was clear that National Register data for economists would be available for 1966 as well as, initially, for 1964. In May 1966, the Research Committee of the American Economic Association agreed to encourage further research on the kinds of questions which have been listed and shortly thereafter President Milton Friedman appointed the following Advisory Committee to the undersigned authors: Professor Karl A.
