TRIBUTARIES Here, on the brink of a new millenium, we stand like Janus, one face looking back, one forward. We in our odd mixture of hope and nostalgia. We of the diverging paths and converging destiny. We're not sure what tomorrow brings nor what yesterday has meant. We're too busy to pay much attention to the ever-present now. We are at once tenaciously noble and abjectly absurd. We contradict. We defy definition. We take what's horrible within us and turn it into something beautiful. We take what is beautiful around us and turn it into something horrible. We won't be satisfied, but we just can't keep from trying. Hence our wonderful accomplishments and our new millenium blues. Our dreams of wealth and power and our turn to absurdity. Twenty years after his death, an American icon of bravery, strength, and justice returns to sell beer. Despite all scientific evidence supporting Darwin's theory, one state decides evolution isn't a worthy subject of education. Grown men are paid millions of dollars to climb into a ring and beat each other's brains out. Other grown men receive millions of dollars to pretend to beat each other's brains out. And we love it. We want to climb into that ring and beat somebody's brains out, too. And yet, and yet, we'll conquer a disease and we'll make medical breakthroughs that allow someone to walk again or see again. We go to the aid of somé country ravished by bad weather or other natural disaster. We'll pass a dollár bili to the bum on the corner even though we know he'll probably just use it to get drunk or high. We'll brave the burning building for a dog or cat. We'll stop and help the traveller in trouble. We'll give up a kidney. We'll write a poem or paint something beautiful that does something to us we can't even describe but know that somehow in someway it makes us better. We reach for the stars. We batter the earth. We care for the ill and send our young people out to kill each other. We fear and we overcome fear. We hate. We love. How do we make any sense of it all? Oh, brave new world that has such people in it. What will become of us? And would knowing make any difference? Perhaps all is as it should be. Who's to say? The great mystery
