A NEW SPOROMORPH GENUS FROM NORTHWESTERN SOUTH DAKOTAByEdward A. STANLEY,(Pan American Petroleum Corporation Research Center, Tulsa, Oklahoma).SoMMAinE. Introduction.In a recent palynological investigation of upper Cretaceous and lower Tertiary continental sediments of northwestern South Dakota, western United States (Stanley, 1960), a new and interesting spo-romorph genus, Wodehouseia, was encountered. Two species are presently assignable to this genus, one of which appears to be restricted to sediments of late Cretaceous age, whereas the other appears to be restricted to sediments of early Paleocene age.Other, perhaps different species assignable to Wodehouseia have been observed by both Dr. R. H. Tschudy (personal communication, November, 1960) in samples from the Laramie formation (Maestri-chian) of Colorado and by Dr. .lohn W. Hall (personal communication, April, 1959) from the upper Mesa Verde formation (upper Campanian) of the central Rocky Mountain region and also from the late Cretaceous sediments of Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts. Because of the stratigraphic restriction of Wodehouseia in northwestern South Dakota and because of its occurrence at roughly similar stratigraphic positions in other widely separated areas, it appears that Wodehouseia may serve as a valuable guide fossil for the upper Cretaceous-lower Tertiary sediments in the western and, possibly, eastern portions of the United States.Poi.i.en et Spores, Vol. Ill, n° 1.
