Introduction
The best of Britain! A fantastic commission within the compass of a single small volume. But this book sets out to show just that, mainly in gazetteer form, and to pinpoint the major items of interest, architecturally or historically, within Britain. The country is divided into convenient regions and a glance at the contents pages will quickly show these divisions. The holiday resorts and main centres are succinctly described and nearby items of particular interest included. Buildings, ancient monuments, historic houses and beautiful gardens, essentially those to which there is public access, have all been noticed. Where possible admission times have been included.
The places coming in for particular mention in the "Of Special Interest" sections are entirely of the Editor's own choosing. The omission from these lists of any particular item does not infer its lack of note or interest for there are, indeed, many more items deserving of mention than our space permits. Even so, by a careful use of these lists and the relevant gazetteer entries, the Editor is confident that the visitor will be able to extract the most rewarding return from his visit, whatever his taste.
Ancient Monuments
A great many of the ancient monuments of Britain, from prehistoric dolmen to abbey, castle or house, come under the protection of the Ministry of Public Building and Works. This Government department zealously guards and preserves our ancient heritage, and for the most part, there is public access to the properties, admission times being standard, as set out below. Throughout the book they are identified by the use of the letters AM.
Standard hours of admission are:
Weekdays Sundays
Mar-Apr 9-30-S-30 2-5.30
May-Sept 930-7 2-7
Oct 9.30-5.30 2-5.30
Nov-Feb 9-30-4 2-4
Many monuments are also open from 9.30 on Sundays in summer.
