Foreword In Memóriám to Dr. Eörs Bajusz Originally the Foreword to this volume was to be prepared by Dr. Eörs Bajusz. , His untimely death in Montreal on February 24, 1973, however, interrupted the I accomplishment of this task. Thus it was felt that it would be altogether fitting j, and appropriate to dedicate these introductory remarks to the memory of this extraordinary colleague and friend, who, more than any other person, was ; responsible for the establishment and perpetuation of the International Study I Group for Research in Cardiac Metabolism. \ An In Memóriám detailing Dr. Bajusz' medical contributions and life history, - initiated by Dr. Richard J. Bing and Dr. Lionel Opie, appeared recendy in the Journal of Molecular and Cellular Cardiology. But apart from his many contributions to medicine and medical research at large, Dr. Bajusz will be remembered by his colleagues in the Study Group mainly for his organizational talent, enthusiasm, and limitless dedication to the affairs of the group, and for his congenial, gentle personality. Indeed, in many ways his personal life reflects the history of the Study Group. It was at the time of the Second Annual Meeting in Gargano, Italy, that he suffered the first of his heart attacks. The handicap which this introduced into his life was disguised by the tenacity and energy which he continued to display in the pursuit of his scientific activities. It was again at a Study Group symposium in 1971 in Nairobi, Kenya, that he suffered his second heart attack. In spite of this second severe blow to his health. Dr. Bajusz maintained his usual high level of energetic commitment to the Study Group and to his other scientific activities. It was during the final preparations for this volume and amidst plans for the Freiburg meeting of the ISRCM that Dr. Bajusz suffered his last and fatal attack. His attitude throughout this very difficult period in his personal life has been described by one of his Study Group ; colleagues (Dr. 0. Poupa): "He had so many plans in the shadow of menacing death; he was so courageous in devoting all effort to keeping the group going, helping all of us through the example of his personal qualities." Dr. Bajusz' extraordinarily active and productive scientific career speaks for «' itself. He was responsible for more than 300 publications, including the writing and editing of 16 books, the organization of numerous international scientific conferences and symposia, the founding and editorship of scientific journals, and many other related achievements. And his personal qualities were an example and an inspiration to all who knew him. As one of his friends (John R. Baker) has written: "Apart from his scientific achievements, I believe he was a giant amongst men in courtesy and kindness, and I do hope these special virtues of his will not go unremarked.
