Foreword
I have found this an informative and moving book, and I hope it will be widely read.
People like ourselves, who live in countries where there is complete freedom of religion, freedom of expression and lack of persecution, find it hard to imagine what life is like for great numbers of Christians and others who believe that those things matter but who live under regimes which hate and despise them.
Some of us prefer not to hear about such situations - life is more comfortable if we close our ears. Others do not know where to get reliable information - 'you can't believe everything the papers tell you'.
This little book should serve to stab awake the consciences of the comfortable. It will serve to provide completely reliable information for those who want to know what is going on in modern Russia - for facts from Keston College can be trusted.
It will do more, if it does for others what it has done for me. It will provide a very humbling experience as one reads stories of'martyrdom' in the sense of immensely costly witness to the truth; and it will provide a strong injection of hope as one watches the power of love over hate, and of unity through the experience of Christ's presence.
Michael Bourdeaux's deepest wish will be granted if the reading of his book arouses continuing prayer for those who suffer in exile, prison, or 'remedial' psychiatric hospitals.
