STUDIES IN THE FIELD OF THEyrf^MICROSCOPIC FUNGI/Wt^e^^.-^^Ill*ON ENTOMOPHTHORA APHIDIS H. HOFFM./WITH SPECIAL REGARD TO THE FAMILY OF THE ENTOMOPHTHORACEAE IN GENERALByJ. A. Krenner (Received March 5, 1961)In spring 1935 the alfalfa growing at first promisingly has become later on severely infested with aphids in the northwestern confine of the Great Hungarian Low Land (28, p. 201). The heavy attack of these insects widely impaired the views of the first mawing of the worthy crop. In May, however, an unexpected event set bounds to the prevalence of the aphids. There appeared nearly all along the territory an insectivorous parasitic fungus, named Entomophthora aphidis H. Hoffm., which seized the aphids, and devastated them in great masses. Of the habitats, which were situated on the areas of several counties, are mentionable for the particular copiousness of the findings the village Abony in county Pest, the villages Kalkapolna and Visz-nek in county Heves, and the district of the town Miskolc (county Borsod).^Description of the fungusThe leaves and stalks of the alfalfa damaged by the aphids dead with the fungus disease were densely covered with the dry corpses of the aphids, adhering tightly to the foliage. These presented themselves in the materials of the most localities in two form modifications. A number of them were reddish-brown in colour and in spite of their mightily swollen abdomens, still preserved their natural aphidian shape. The others already underwent from the inward ravage of the fungus such an alteration that their insectile-character was no more macroscopically recognizable. These already turned with their entire wholes into fungus-thalU "fungus pseudomorphs" , had light ochre tinge, and stuck with peculiar firmness to the foliage. The lucern-feeder aphid, while alive is green, and is named Amphorophora onobrychis Boy.* The titles and the publishing periodical of the first two works of this series by the author are:Studien aus dem Gebiete der mikroskopischen Pilze. I. Uber eine verkannte Pythium-Art. Mit 3 Tafeln. Botanikai Közlemények. Vol. XL. 1943. p. 58. pis. I-III.Studien aus dem Gebiete der mikroskopischen Pilze. II. Die Cylindrosporiose der Edelkastanie. Der Ursprung der Pilze. Mit 1 Tafel. Botanikai Közlemények. Vol. XLI. 1944. p. 115. pl. IV.^ I found the same fungus in the same species of aphid also later on though not in similar rich materials in the surroundings of the village Adánd (county Somogy) on cock's-head (Onobrychis viciaefolia Scop.) (in April 1936), and in the environs of the village Velence (county Fejér) on peas (Pisum sativum L.) (in June 1956).
