Prime Minister Antall was one of the greatest Hungarian statesmen of the last 100 years. The present book deals with Antall’s role in the success of the Hungarian regime change, the country’s transformation from a Communist dictatorship into a market economy and a modern liberal parliamentary democracy. The book is based on the author’s direct experience as an adviser of Prime Minister Antall and of the members of his government and on extensive continued research during the last 30 years. The main topics include the objective of the social market economy, the resource shortage and the external debt, the need for sustained growth and the economic policy strategy (GAM), and the integration in Europe and the Western economic order. The volume concludes with an overview of the values of the late Prime Minister and of the long-term importance of Antall’s legacy for Hungary, Europe and the world.
