The Duke of Monmouth was the first-born and best-loved of King Charles II's many illegitimate children. In his dark good looks and charming manners he was astonishingly like his royal father. "But Monmouth could never reconcile himself to the fact that his illegitimacy barred him from the throne. Reckless ambition triumphed over family loyalty and he allowed himself to become the darling of the mob and the focus of Protestant hopes. It was a path that was to lead him first into exile, then into open rebellion, and finally, at the age of thirty-six, to the executioner's block.
