Foreword There were somé skeptical voices around in 1977 when I had the idea of founding a journal dedicated to quantitative studies of science. Although, I cannot say that 1 have remained untouched by the arguments the skeptics have enumerated, I have been taking the risk of founding the journal and the first issue lefit the printers in 1978. The main argument for that decision was the very positive attitűdé towards the journal of many scientists worldwide between them Eugene Garfíeld, Gennadiy Dobrov, Michael Moravcsik, Derek Price to name a few. I am proud to observe now that it seems that the decision taken in 1977 has not been a precipitous one. After about three decades of serving the international scientometric community Scientometrics has achieved the position it seems to deserve. The content of the pages which follow presents an intent to argue for the abovementioned. Tibor Braun The John Derek De Solla Price Award of the journal Scientometrics Established originally by Tibor Braun (editor) and the publishers of Scientometrics, the Price Award is awarded in reccognition of excellence through outstanding, sustained career achievements in the field of quantitative studies of science. The Price Medál was awarded, approximately annually, beginning 1984. The list of distinguished awardees (see: below) comprised those individuals whose contributions have traced and defined the scope and depth of the field. Their achievements ranged from pioneering analysis methodology and applications, through development of new principles and procedures. The Award is international in scope since those who have been honored were from North America, Europe, the Middle East and Asia.
