(2013): Prominent personality of medicinal plant science - Gábor Rácz (1928-2013). - Kanitzia 20: 7-40.The work is dedicated to the memory and scientific activity of Professor Gábor Rácz (1928-2013), who was a prominent Hungarian scientist and personality of the medicinal plant science of the 20th century in the Carpathian Basin. He was bom in Arad (15. 06. 1928, Romania) and died in Pécs (17. 06. 2013, Hungary). His fundamental activity has related to the Institute of Medicine and Pharmacy from Targu Mure? (Marosvásárhely, Transylvania) founded in 1948 (now University of Medicine and Pharmacy). He arrived there to establish a good research team in pharmacognosy, a research school of the medicinal plants and a botanical garden. In the second part of his life, after retirement he settled down in Pécs (Tansdanubia, Hungary) and his activity was performed at the University of Pécs, Faculty of Medicine, Institute of Pharmacognosy He was an excellent professor and prodigious researcher, his presentations and lectures were made in various languages (Hungarian, Romanian, French, English, German), during four decades in Targu Mure§ and two decades also in Pécs (Hungary).His scientific work comprehended large themes of the medicinal plant research like: taxonomy and anatomy, history of science, chemistry, chorology, genetic resources, nature protection, plant breeding and cultivation, pharmacognosy, natural remedies, phytotherapy, aromatherapy, homeopathy etc. During his prodigious scientific activity he permanently worked together with his wife Erzsébet Kotilla-Rácz who, also a scientist and professor of pharmacognosy. He was the leader of 19 doctorate student thesis, elaborated 26 scientific books and monographies, 7 stencilled sheets/lectures notes, and more that 500 scientific articles published in journals like: Planta Medico, Die Pharmazie, Naturwissenschaften, Scientia Pharmaceiitica, Herta Hungarica, Herba Romanica, Österreichische Ápoth. Zeitung, Kanitzia, Studii ^i Cercet. Biol. Bot., Note Botanice etc., Most important books and handbooks written by Gábor Rácz were several times re-edited like.- Medicinal plants 1970, 1975, 1984, Medicinal and aromatic plants 1972, 1975, Medicinal plants - Phytotherapy and alternative medicine 1992, 2012. The present study contains only a selected list from his main publications.He was a great promoter of the holistic view and treating/applying of the medicinal plants. His scientific results were awarded by various institutes and academic societies. So, for a long time he was the president of the Romanian Committee of Medicinal Plants (1974-1990), member of the Romanian Medical Academy (1993), member of the International Academy for the History of Pharmacy (1988), member of the New York Science Academy etc. Two universities conferred to him the title of Doctor honoris causa", certificated by the University of MedicineI]' ' \ : 4Vm I ,.
