Dear Participant,The 1" European Chemistry Congress, the first of its land, has been organised by the European Association for Chemical and Molecular Sciences, and co-sponsored by the Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker, the Royal Society of Chemistry and the Société Française de Chimie. This Confess will be a showcase for chemical sciences in Europe and will bring together about 3,000 chemical and molecular scientists from industry, academia and government institutions from Europe and around the world. The scientific programme includes plenary, keynote, and invited lecmres as well as contributed oral communications and poster sessions. A coordinated series of seventeen symposia devoted to a variety of state-of-the-art topics will focus on the very latest developments in chemistry and the molecular sciences. The Book of Abstracts provides an up-to-date overview on a broad spectrum of chemistry in the 21 century and is a compilation of the most recent progress in Europe. It was an Olympian feat to set up the scientific programme and bring these abstracts together, for which ourselves and all participants have to express our gratitude to Prof. Peter Kündig, co-chair of the Scientific Committee, as well as symposia chairs and co-chairs, who evaluated the abstracts. We would also like to acknowledge the tremendous efforts of Prof. George Horvai, chairman, and Dr. Petra Bombiez, co-chairman of the Local Organising Committee, which resulted in the first Book of Abstracts for the fkst European Chemistry Conference - a kind of guide to European chemistry at the beginning of the new millennium. The present Congress is intended to be the first in a continuing series that will regularly take stock of research in chemical sciences, point out perspectives for the future and bring together chemists from all over Europe and the world at large. We wish all participants an enriching stay in Budapest - benefiting fully from both our beautiful city and the exciting science that will be presented.Gábor Náray-SzabóJean-Marie LehnCongress chairmanChair of the Programme CommitteeIt is time for the European Chemists' Community to strengthen their organisation and to this end the former Federation of European Chemical Societies (FECS) has transformed into the European Association for Chemical and Molecular Sciences (EuCheMS).During this transformation, the Chemistry Community called for a Conference, the 1" European Chemistry Congress, where Chemists can discuss the role of their research in these rapidly evolving times. This Conference will be the first of a series aimed at bringing together Chemists from across Europe and worldwide to catalyse the growth of their community. This achievement has been made possible thanks to the enthusiasm of my predecessor, Professor Gábor Náray-Szabó, and of all the members of EuCheMS Executive Committee. The Scientific Committee, chaired by Nobel laureate Jean-Marie Lehn, co-chaired by Peter Kündig, and composed of representatives of National Chemical Societies, has carefully selected the best of what has been produced through the scientific imagination and skill of European and worldwide Chemists. We can see how the achievements of Chemists and chemistry are moving beyond individual molecules to deal with complex systems -from design and synthesis of nanoparticles to the understanding of the changes in molecules that accompany disease and aging. This will stimulate a new flow of ideas, opportunities, and solutions of benefit to Chemistry and Society.Although it is the first Congress of a new series there are more than 2000 active participants. In addition to the hosting Society, other National Societies (RSC, GDCh, SEC, and SCI to mention only some) have contributed in many ways to the success of the Congress, particularly by providing grants to young participants and by sponsoring symposia, lecturers, and awards. The realisation of this Conference has also been made possible by the colleagues of the Hungarian Chemical Society and of the University of Budapest, chaired by Professor György Horvai, who have dedicated a significant amount of their time and energy to this event. Thanks to all of them. Finally, my thanks go to all the scientists who have decided to come to Budapest to debate their newest scientific results in our fascinating research area. The city of Budapest will certainly provide the environment where personal contacts can develop in a friendly atmosphere.Best wishes to all the participants in the 1" European Chemistry Congress.
