Az Európa Nostra - a „mi Európánk"-az építészeti és természeti örökség megmentésével foglalkozó legjelentősebb „nem kormányzati" szervezet, melyet 1996-ban az Európa Tanács felkért az európai örökség megóvásán tevékenykedő szervezetek munkájának összefogására, az „Európai Örökség Csoport" megalapítására. Az Európa Nostrát 1963-ban civil műemlékvédő szervezetek hozták létre Párizsban. A nemzetközivé vált szervezet első elnöke Sir Winston Churchill veje. You might be advised by some people that the best approach is to leaf through the whole book looking at the pictures, as everything is self-explanatory. I, however, would not advise this. Surely a little explanation is in order, for not everyone knows what a Europa Nostra Award is. Europa Nostra —'Our Europe'— is the most important non-governmental organisation dealing with rescuing architectural and natural heritage, and in 1996 it was asked by the Council of Europe to coordinate the work of heritage protection organisations by founding the 'European Heritage Group'. Europa Nostra was established by civil organisations in Paris in 1963 for the protection of national monuments and landmarks, and its first president was Sir Winston Churchill's son-in-law, Lord Duncan Sandys. In 1984 the former Dutch Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and later President of the Council of Europe, Hans de Koster, took over the presidency. To this very day, the secretariat of Europa Nostra has been working in Hans de Koster's house in The Hague. Since 1990, HRH Prince Consort Henrik of Denmark has been directing the organisation.
