General Facts about Sweden Population: 9 million Area: 450,000 km^ Capital: Stockholm Language: Swedish (Germanic roots) Religion: Evangelical-Lutheran Currency: Krona (SEK) Geology From a geological point of view Sweden is a very old country. In many places the bedrock is a primary one and contains the oldest kinds of rocks in existence. These are the remains of enormous mountain chains, which have eroded over time. Sweden has experienced four ice ages. These have produced a varying landscape, from the flat south (which was covered by water) to the mountainous north, with Kebnekaise (2,111 m) as its highest peak. The country is the third largest in Western Europe. Climate Throughout the entire country, Sweden's climate is about eight degrees Celsius warmer than most other countries at the same latitude. This is because of the proximity to the warm Gulf Stream in the Atlantic Ocean. The greatest annual rainfall occurs in the mountainous regions - more than 1,000 mm. Sweden is situated in the northernmost part of the temperate climatic belt. The highest record temperature is 39° C in Ultuna and the lowest, -53° C, was measured in Vuogatjolme. Sweden has very distinct seasons, with cold winters, blossoming springs and reasonably warm summers.
