PREFACEThe extension of international relations in recent years has shown that knowledge of foreign languages is necessary for people following the most diverse professions. For many of them, who may have contented themselves in the past with reading English newspapers, periodicals, and books, it has become imperative to be able to speak English. In compiling the present book I had two objects in view to provide adequate texts which would help the student to get a better command of spoken English, and to give him an insight into life in Britain. Living speech is in the form of dialogues and so the book is composed of talks between a young German who visits England and his two English friends who show him round. Travelling with the three young people he will visit many places of interest and beauty spots the British Isles are full of them and he will become acquainted with some of the problems the English people have to face today. The volume does not pretend to be exhaustive, but the texts as well as the photos (which were taken by the author during his stay in England) will give the student some idea of what England is like.I am greatly indebted to Mrs. Marguerite Green, Coventry, for her valuable advice and proof-reading.The author
