Introduction Zum Geleit In 1982 Tartu State University is observing its 350th anniversary. During three and a half centuries alma mater Tartu-ensis has traversed a long and complicated path. The latter is abundantly documented in written and pictorial form. It is the aim of this album to provide a cross-section of the University's history from the foundation of the Academia Dorpa-tensis in 1632 up to the present period of the rapid development of Tartu State University. The present album consists of two large parts. In the first part, a survey is given of the three earlier periods in the history of the University - the foundation and activities of Tartu University in Tartu and Parnu in the 17th century and the early 18th century; the re-opening of Tartu University in 1802, and the development of the University into one of the most important centres of science and education in Russia, and of the development of the University after the Great October Socialist Revolution in bourgeois Estonia in 1919 -1940. The second part of the album is devoted to the Soviet Tartu State University, its formation and rapid development from the summer of 1940 until the beginning of the 1980s. In the past as well as at the present time Tartu University has been a widely known centre of science and culture where humanistic ideas have always been held in high esteem. Despite the class nature of higher education, Tartu University in the feudal and capitalist periods also educated democrats and revolutionaries in addition to ideologists and officials loyal to the authorities. It is this progressive feature that helped to make Tartu an important centre in the cultural history of many nationalities. The contribution of Tartu University to the history of science and culture has depended, first and foremost, on people. On people who have helped to advance science, people who have taught science as well as on people who have studied science. That is why the central place in the album belongs to the distinguished scientists and cultural figures of the past and present, to those graduates and teachers of Tartu University whose creative work has brought fame and acknowledgment to their alma mater both far and near. The functioning of a university is not possible without material resources that form the foundation of study and research. The album shows the university buildings in the process of change over the centuries, what they look like inside, their scientific equipment, but also the everyday life of the University against a background of the history of Tartu. The album provides an emotional survey of the University's past, and it enables one to get an idea of its busy present. The numerous illustrations help to evoke a mood in keeping with the University's jubilee. 1982 begeht die Universität Tartu ihren 350.Jahrestag. Im Laufe von dreieinhalb Jahrhunderten hat die Alma mater Tartuensis einen langen, beschwerlichen Weg zurückgelegt, von dem sich reichliches Material in Wort und Bild erhalten hat. Das vorliegende Album möchte einen Längsschnitt durch die Geschichte der Universität geben, angefangen vom Grün-dungsjahr der Academia Dorpatensis 1632 bis in die Gegenwart, in die Jahre ihrer stürmischen Entwicklung als Staatliche Universität Tartu. Das Album besteht aus zwei umfangreichen Teilen. Der erste Teil gibt einen Überblick über die drei ersten Perioden der Geschichte der Universität: die Gründung der Universität und ihre Tätigkeit in Tartu und Pärnu im XVII. und Anfang des XVIII.Jh., die Wiedereröffnung der Tartuer Universität 1802 und ihre Entwicklung zu einem der bedeutendsten Zentren Rußlands für Wissenschaft und Bildung sowie ihre Entwicklung nach der Großen Sozialistischen Oktoberrevolution im bürgerlichen Estland in den Jahren 1919-1940. Der zweite Teil des Albums ist der sowjetischen Staatlichen Universität Tartu gewidmet, ihrem Werden und ihrer stürmischen Entwicklung seit dem Sommer 1940 bis Anfang der 80er Jahre unseres Jahrhunderts. Die Tartuer Universität ist seit jeher eine weitbekannte höhere Lehranstalt, ein Zentrum der Wissenschaft und Kultur gewesen, wo man stets humanistische Ideale hoch geschätzt hat. Trotz des Klassencharakters der höheren Bildung hat die Tartuer Universität auch im Zeitalter des Feudalismus und Kapitalismus außer den ihrer Obrigkeit treu ergebenen Ideologen und Beamten auch Demokraten und Revolutionäre ausgebildet. Gerade dieser progressive Zug hat dazu beigetragen, Tartu zu einem bedeutenden Zentrum der Kulturgeschichte vieler Völker zu machen. Der Beitrag der Tartuer Universität zur Geschichte der Wissenschaft und Kultur hing vor allem von den Menschen ab, die hier die Wissenschaft förderten und ihre Erkenntnisse vermittelten, sowie von denen, die sich diese Erkenntnisse aneigneten. Daher richtet sich das Hauptaugenmerk des Albums auf die bekanntesten Wissenschaftler und Kulturschaffenden der Vergangenheit und Gegenwart, auf diejenigen Zöglinge und Lehrkräfte der Universität, die durch ihre schöpferische Arbeit ihrer Alma mater Ruhm und Anerkennung gebracht haben. Die Tätigkeit der Universität ist ohne eine materielle Basis, die die Grundlage der Unterrichts- und Forschungstätigkeit bildet, nicht möglich. Das Album zeigt daher auch die Universitätsgebäude im Wandel der Jahrhunderte, die Interieurs, die wissenschaftliche Apparatur auf dem historischen Hintergrund der alten Universitätsstadt Tartu. Das Album gibt einen kurzen Rückblick auf die Vergangenheit und ermöglicht, einen Blick auf das tatenreiche Heute zu lenken, und schafft mit seinen zahlreichen Illustrationen eine dem Universitätsjubiläum entsprechende Atmosphäre.
