Austra ia Land of Contrast
What is Australia? Is it the vast red desert and gnarled purple ranges of the hot inland? Or is it the fresh green ladness of innumerable fern gullies that tumble the length of the east coast? Perhaps the essence of Australia lies in those endless stretches of broad golden beaches thumped by blue surf. But just as characteristically Australian are the crisp white mountains where gum trees, hot conifers, droop with snow. And what of the sprawling modern cities, the rich undulatingfarmland, the
glistening tropical rainforest and the dry, grey-green bush? They are just as typical of this magnificent country, the largest of all island continents. No single natural feature symbolises Australia; it is a wondrous conglomerate of dazzling contrasts. Australia has always been a nation of migrants, it is thought that the first settlers, the Australian Aborigines, entered the country by land bridges in the north about 40,000 years ago though this estimate is by no means certain. New South Wales
In the history of white settlement New South Wales has the distinction of being the first colony. From those early inauspicious beginnings New South Wales has grown into a prosperous state richly endowed with natural and man-made attractions.
The capital, Sydney, is located on a magnificent natural harbour which sets the vibrant mood of the city. Spanned by the majestic arch of its famous bridge, adorned by the soaring white sails of the Opera House and quickened by the vitality of the Darling Harbour development, the harbour is the city's focus. Also overlooking the harbour is Sydney's famous Taronga Zoo. Magnificent beaches complement the harbour, making Sydney rich in opportunities for water sports and other related activities. Some other attractions not to be missed include many restored historical buildings. Powerhouse Museum, China Town, the Sydney Aquarium and Circular Quay to name a few.
Beyond the precincts of Sydney, New South Wales has much to offer. For the nature lover, the Blue Mountains , numerous national parks and almost endless stretches of unspoilt beaches are serene and beautiful havens. In winter, well-appointed snow resorts are the destination of thousands of ardent skiers.
