nsm^-' - S^iAngus McMillan passed through rich Gippsland valleys like these seeking a route to Corner Inlet, Victoria.McMillan, AngusAngus McMillan (1810-65) was a pioneer grazier, and explorer of the gippsland district of Victoria. He became a member of the Victorian Legislative Assembly in 1859.After his arrival in Australia from Scotland in 1838 he worked as manager on two properties owned by Captain Lachlan Macalister, at first near Camden and later in the Monaro district of S New South Wales. In 1839 he journeyed across the Snowy River to the E corner of Victoria, and glimpsed the rich Gippsland plains before turning N to Omeo. Macalister, delighted by his report in a time of severe drought, agreed to finance further exploration of the plains. He also asked McMillan to seek a route to Corner Inlet from where produce and stock could be shipped to other settlements. McMillan led his expedition down the Tambo in 1840, crossed that river as well as the Nicholson, Mitchell, Perry, Avon, Macalister and Thomson but returned when food ran short, failing to reach Corner Inlet.McMillan later estabhshed a station at Nuntin at the mouth of the Avon River for Macalister and a station for himself further upstream which he called Bushy Park. After further exploration McMillan finally reachedthe coast at Port Albert, a little E of Corner Inlet, in 1841. Many of the exploratory routes of McMillan were retraced by the Polish explorer Paul Strzelecki who renamed some of the prominent landforms named by McMillan. In particular, he renamed 'Caledonia australis' Gippsland. Strzelecki thus took much of the credit really due to McMillan. In 1864 he led the government's Alpine Expedition to find routes to the goidfields of Omeo, Dargo and Matlock. In the face of enormous difficulties, culminating in the disbanding of his party in 1865, he managed at last to reach Iguana Creek, travelling alone. There he died of injuries received when a packhorse rolled on him.McRAE, GrahamGraham McRae is a leading New Zealand racing-car driver and designer.
