A Maori constable, Henare Kepa Te Ahururu, was the first person to receive the decoration.NEW ZEALAND DAYNew Zealand Day is a national public holiday that commemorates the signing of the treaty of waitangi by Maori chiefs on 6 February, 1840. Formerly called Waitangi Day, the national day is celebrated by an official ceremony at Waitangi House, waitangi, and functions are held in communities throughout NZ and by NZ government offices overseas.NEW ZEALAND HISTORIC PLACES TRUSTThe New' Zealand Historic Places Trust was set up to preserve places and objects of historic interest and to stimulate public interest in them. A special Act in 1954 gave the Trust the task of preserving 'such places and objects and things as are of national or local historic interest or of archaeological, scientific, educational, architectural, hterary or other special national or local interest'.The Trust consists of 15 members. They include representatives of the Maori people; the NZ Institute of Architects; the NZ Library Association; the University of NZ; the Art Galleries and Museums Association; the Royal Society of New Zealand; and various historical societies. One of the first projects the Trust undertook was the recording of Maori rock paintings at the junction of the Waikato and Waipa Rivers, where the Waipapa Dam was to be built. The Trust made drawings and photographs of rock paintings, and even removedA villager from tfie Highlands of Papua New Guinea splits cane with his teeth to make wall coverings for his house.Pompallier House in Russell is one of the properties owned by the NZ Historic Places Trust.entire sections of rock. Other major tasks included the restoration of the second oldest house in NZthe headquarters of the Church Missionary Society, built in 1831 at Waimate. The battlefield of Te Porere (1869), near Tokaanu on the Wanganui River, was cleared and developed so that the public could view the earthworks and redoubts used in the last battle of the maori wars. The Trust administers and opens to the public properties such as Waimate Mission House, Pompallier House in Russell, Eteven-eaux House in Akaroa, and old St Paul's in Wellington.NEW ZEALAND LITERARY FUNDThe New Zealand Literary Fund was established by the Government in 1947 to provide financial help for NZ authors and publishers.Grants to writers and publishers are recommended by an advisory committee. Additional grants are made towards the publication costs of some literary magazines. Publishers receive financial help towards the cost of publishing books of literary value, or historical and other scholarly studies, that are unlikely to be profitable. The Fund also provides money for the publication of critical works on NZ literature. Cash prizes are awarded to selected authors each year. The money enables an author to work full-time on a creative project.1093I I- i ,
