His reputation is rivalled only by carbine, also New Zealand bred.In 1930-31 Phar Lap won a succession of races, including the 1930 Melbourne cup. In that race, his greatest victory, he carried 61.6kg and started at odds of 11-8 on, the shortest priced winner in the history of the cup. Phar Lap raced 50 times in Australia for 36 wins, three seconds and two thirds. In 1932, Phar Lap was sent to America to compete in the Agua Cahente Handicap held in Mexico. He won in record time. This was his last race as he died shortly afterwards following a mysterious illness.Phar Lap stood 17.1 hands high. His heart is preserved at the Canberra Anatomical Museum, and his mounted hide can be seen at the National Museum of Victoria in Melboume. The prize money won by Phar Lap including about SUS25,000 from the Agua Cahente race, totalled nearly /;56,500. He was foaled in NZ in 1926 and was bought as a yearling by the NZ trainer, Harry Telford, for j(;i68.
