skuasSkuas are large sea-birds which form a subfamily of the gull family Laridae. They are the pirates of the polar seas, diving on gulls, terns and penguins until the victim disgorges its catch of fish. Skuas are also scavengers.Four species of skua are seen on Australian and New Zealand seas. Two species, the Arctic skua and the long-tailed skua, are rare visitors from the northern polar seas. The great skua and the pomarine skua are seen from the coasts of the southern half of Austraha.SLESSOR, KennethKenneth Slessor (1901-71) was a leading Australian poet, journahst and war correspondent. His most famous poem is Fine Bells, written in memory of a friend who was drowned in Sydney Harbour.Slessor published four books of poetry between 1924 and 1939. In 1944 Slessor's own selection of his best work was issued in a volume entitled One Hundred Poems. After that date, with the exception of Beach Burial and a few other verses, he published little poetry. All his verse has been collected in one volume. Poems (1957). fiVe Bells inspired the mural created by Austrahan artist John Olsen for the sydney opera house.Kenneth Slessor was editor of smith's weekly and the Sunday Telegraph; literary editor of the Sydney Sun; and editor of the literary journals Southerly and Vision. During World War II he was an Australian war correspondent. In 1959 he was awarded the OBE for services to Australian literature.Kenneth Slessor was born at Orange, NSW, and educated at the Sydney Church of England Grammar School.SMITH, DonaldDonald Smith (1922- ) is a leading Australian opera singer ancl a soloist with the Austrahan Opera Company. He was the lead tenor in the productions oi Aida early in 1975, and in Tosca in 1974, in the Sydney Opera House.Smith's first appearance was as leading tenor m Edward German's Merrie England when he was nineteen. After World War II he sang on coiTimercial radio stations in Brisbane and with the ABC.
