Wenden was awarded an MBE in 1969.WENTWORTH, D'ArcyD'Arcy Wentworth (1762?-1827) was one of the first medical practitioners in New South Wales.He arrived in the colony in 1790 as Assistant Surgeon with the second fleet, and spent four years on Norfolk Island as assistant in the hospital and superintendent of convicts. On his return to NSW he became an assistant surgeon. In 1811, he took up his appointment as principal surgeon of the Civil Medical Department. In 1810 Wentworth, together with Alexander Riley and Garnham Blaxcell, contracted to build Sydney Hospital in retum for virtual monopoly on the import of rum for three years, a period later extended. The building became known as the rum hospital because of the terms of the contract.Wentworth was appointed a justice of the peace in 1810, and was put in charge of the police force. He was also one of the founders and original directors of the Bank of New South Wales. During his 37 years in the colony Wentworth attained a position of considerable influence and respect. His fairness and humanity contributed greatly to the development of the young colony. At the time of his death he was probably one of the wealthiest men in NSW, with some 8900ha of land. He was the father of William Charles Wentworth.Wentworth was born in Ireland, and related to powerful families in England. He served as an ensign in the Irish Volunteers before training for medicine. In May 1813 he made the first crossing of the blue mountains with Gregory Blaxland and William Lawson. He was later instrumental in the granting of self-government to the colony of New South Wales.Wentworth agitated for a nominated legislative council and an assembly elected on a small property franchise, emancipists were not to be denied either membership or the vote. He believed in trial by jury, a proper process of appeal, and free migration. His, influence may be seen in the New South Wales Act of 1823 which incorporated some of his views.Through the newspaper the Australian, which he published with Robert Wardell, Wentworth continued his campaign for trial by jury and representative government. His attack on Governor Sir Ralph Darling led to cases in the Supreme Court of NSW in 1828 and 1829.
