The narrow gauge rail line from the Kianga-Moura district has grcady increased the amount of coal exported from Gladstone, particularly to Japan, hi 1973 Gladstone handled the sixth largest tonnage ofall Australian ports.In 1846 Port Curtis became a settlement for ex-convicts, the basis of a new colony to be called 'North AustraUa'. This scheme, proposed by William Gladstone, Secretary for the Colonies, was short lived, but a town called Gladstone later grew up on the site.GLASS MANUFACTUREGlass manufacture in Australia is controlled mainly by Australian Consolidated Ltd (ACI).The Australian glass industry supplies the country's domestic glass needs but small amounts of special glass products arc imported.New Zealand's glass manufacturers, Alc.x Han'cy Industries (AHl), is connected with ACI. Their two major manufacturing plants produce most of the glass and glass products made in NZ.589
