INTRODUCTIONBritain 1972 is the twenty-third official handbook in the series preparedand revised each year by Reference Division of the Central Office of In-formation with the co-operation of other government departments and ofmany national organisations. The handbook is widely known as an establishedwork of reference and is the mainstay of the reference facilities provided bythe British Information Services in many countries. It is available overseasin a limited free edition and is on sale throughout the world. This 1972 edition, which covers events up to September 1971 gives afactual account of the administration and the national economy of Britain. It describes the activities of many of the national institutions, both officialand unofficial, and shows the part played by the Government in the life ofthe community. The handbook does not claim to be comprehensive, nor does it attemptto cover Britain's participation in Commonwealth or world affairs. Thefactual and statistical information it contains is compiled from official andother authoritative sources, and, while most sections of the book relate toBritain as a whole, facts and figures for England, Wales, Scotland, andNorthern Ireland are also given separately when relevant.Readers who require more detailed information should consult the AnnualAbstract of Statistics and the Monthly Digest of Statistics, issued by the CentralStatistical Office, and also other government publications and standard worksof reference, some of which are listed in the bibliography towards the end ofthe handbook. Readers are asked to note that in Britain the Central Officeof Information reference documents listed in the bibliography and markedwith an asterisk may be obtained, on payment of a small charge, fromReference Division, Central Office of Information; and that overseas theymay be obtained from British Information Offices.
