FOREWORD The series called Disscrtationcs Pannonicae was established by Prof. András Alföldi in 1932, for the publication of the doctoral dissertations written at the Institute for Coins and Ancient Studies of the Pázmány Péter University, Budapest founded in 1777. The first series (Ser. 1) included historical and epigraphic works from the Roman Period. The second, larger series (Ser. II) published monographs of Roman artefact types illustrated with photographs and plates of drawings or detailed, comprehensive studies on questions of Roman history and religion. These monographs of the Alfoldi-school have not only brought reforms in the approach and methodology in Hungarian archaeology but also had a lasting influence on the development of Roman provincial archaeology all over Europe. Subsequently, the series was extended. Essential dissertations by pupils of Ferenc Tompa, the then famous pre-historian professor at the university, were published as well treating the archaeology of Neolithic, Bronze Age, Pre-Scythian, and Celtic period. Until 1947, altogether 36 works were published within the two series until. After the Second World War there was an attempt to substitute the series with the modest Rcgcszcti Dolgozatok az ELTE Régészeti Intézetéből / Dissertationes Archacohgicae, a periodical launched in 1958 in Hungarian (editors: János Banner, Gyula László, and Zoltán Oroszlán). The original series, Dissertationes Pannonicae (Ser. Ill), was re-started in 1984 with an extended subject matter where various dissertations and conference proceedings of proto-history and medieval studies were also published. The general editor of the series first was András Mócsy, then Miklós Szabó. The editorial board comprised of the teachers at the archaeological departments of the university: László Bartosiewicz, László Borhy, István Bona, András Kubinyi, József Laszlovszky, Pál Raczky, and Gábor Vékony. Unfortunately it was not possible to secure a lasting financial background thus only 7 volumes were published until 2005. The new series of the old and influential Dissertationes Pannonicae (Ser. IV) is restarted now with the intention to return to the original idea of the founders to provide a publication forum for outstanding MA, PhD and habilitation dissertations for all branches of archaeology — prehistoric, classical, provincial Roman, proto-historic, medieval, modern and Near-Eastern studies and archaeometry — taught at the Institute of Archaeological Sciences ofthe Eötvös Loránd University. It is hoped that the revived monograph series will be representative of the scholarly work carried out in our Institute both on a national and an international level. The decision of the Editorial Board, regarding the archaeological study introducing the newly revived series is of symbolic significance from various aspects: The cemetery of Dunaújváros-Duna-dűlő — excavated in the 1950s — is considered to be an exceptional source-material for the Bronze Age of the Carpathian even today. During the past more than half a century, several specialists tried to formulate opinions on smaller or greater parts of the unpubhshed cemetery and serious debates ensued regarding its cultural context. Therefore it was high time that the original excavation results be published. Meanwhile the adventurous story of the material recovered at the Dunaújváros Bronze Age cemetery presents a peculiar picture of the research history in prehistoric archaeology in Hungary following the Second World War. Last but not least the exploration of this particular Bronze Age cemetery was one of the most important works of the late professor István Bona, former head of the Institute, at the beginning of his professional career. With the presentation of the results we would also üke to commemorate his personality. István Bona handed over publication rights of the cemetery publication to one of his beloved students, Magdolna Vicze. The present volume is the slightly amended version of that author's PhD dissertation defended in 2001. The Editorial Board Budapest, July 2011
