Foreword
What is California? A state of the Union; a state of mind; a land of oppression; a land of dreams? These are my impressions of this mysterious region. As age and upbringing affect interpretation, I should explain that 1 was born during World War II and grew up as an Army brat, moving every one to three years. I have lived in the Golden State longer than any other. I have perspective from living in other places, as well as a deep attachment to this state from long stays in Southern and Northern California.
Through these pages, voices of common Californians speak from periods throughout the state's history. 1 chose observant people who express their feelings and make choices. Most of the selections are from letters I have collected; they exemplify their times and ring with authenticity.
History is not static; it does not end. History is not passive either. Readers with a passion for history: live vibrantly, be observant, collect, and save your incoming and outgoing letters and e-mails. The future will be grateful.
Selection, evaluation, and organization make any history impressionistic. If you do not find topics here, seek them out. An included list of books is a starting point; one also can search the Internet. 1 intend to leave readers with a sense of curiosity to discover more.
