From the Publishers This book is appearing on the eve of the Congress of Polish Culture which is meeting in the final year of the celebrations marking the Thousandth Anniversary of the Polish State. Taking part in these Celebrations, the entire population has gone back in thought to the ties between the old times and the new, and to the historical heritage of our nation. One of the tasks of this Congress of Polish Culture, an important event in the celebrations of the Millennium of Polish state~ hood, is that of demonstrating and recalling this heritage and these ties in the realm of national culture. As other nations, the Polish nation has created its own inimitáble culture, one that is at the same time linked by manifold ties with humán culture as a whole, enriching the latter in many areas. The Congress will thus be a manifestation of the great achievements of our national culture. However, its role is not confined to this by any means. We look back in retrospect and make a confrontation of the present day and age of our nation and State with the past, above all with today and tomorrow in mind. And just as we draw political conclusions from the nation's past experience so, too, we draw them for the present day from the development of our culture hitherto, from the cultural revolution which has taken place in People's Poland, and from the tasks of culture in the further construction of socialism in our country.
