PRAGUE. View from the Petfín Hill lookout-the Prague Castle, today the residence of the Presidents of Czechoslovakia. f) ^Czechoslovakia is an ancient Central European conntry lying at the intersection of the highways which shaped European history, and with it the destiny ofthe Czechs, who more than once moulded history in their turn. The Czech and Slovak lands have absorbed almost all the cultural influence of Europe, and at the same time have created a culture of their own in all spheres of humán thought. The nations of Czechoslovakia have throughout the ages had to fight for their independence. This bittér lot has been ofíset by their honourable place among the countries which have never lent themselves to the subjugation of other peoples. Even a cursory glancé at Europe's mountains and rivers on the map reveals the frontiers of Czechoslovakia. The chain of mountains which forms these borders provides natural fortifications for the Czech and Slovak lands. Together with several much smaller national groups, two Slav nations, closely allied in language and spirit, live in fráternál unión in the Czechoslovak Republik -the Czechs and Slovaks.
