Preface Derbyshire, like Scotland, has highlands and lowlands to show. At its northern end the Peak region is one of swelling rocky heights and wild moors, sending down rapid streams to water the southern plains, where they are gathered up by the Trent. Their rugged basins present the most famous and attractive scenes, while the southern valleys are not without picturesque features in a less hold style. A touring-ground so thickly packed with natural spectacles and curiosities affords abundant material for illustration. The author has aimed at accompanying the artists' work with a catalogue raisonné of the features, wonders, and notable names of this county, well worthy of being pictured by pen and pencil. Special prominence has been given to such popular spas as Buxton and Matloek, from which more secluded beauty spots are most often visited; and the volume concludes with a history and description of the ancient town of Derby.
