BUDAPEST UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY AND ECONOMICS FACULTY OF ARCHITECTURE, MISSION STATEMENTThe Faculty of Architecture (the Faculty) of the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BUTE) is the most established and respected institute of tertiary education of graduate architects in Hungary. Its mission is to provide quality education, based on solid elementary training, that involves complete, multiple-level education in several specialised fields, as well, as élite education. The primary characteristic of the graduate engineering programme in the Faculty is its twofold nature: architectural, artistic and engineering studies are combined proportionately, not only due to tradition but also in order to satisfy present social requirements. This is also implied in the Hungarian name of the Faculty, a literal translation of which would be "Faculty of Architecture and Architectural Engineering". Therefore, the educational goal of the Faculty is to train experts who have both theoretical and practical skills in designing built environments. Accordingly, they should have the necessary skills to plan and graphically represent interiors, buildings and building complexes; ! they should have a wide knowledge of the treasures of Hungarian and world architecture, and of the theory and practice of monument preservation; they should be able to perform settlement and regional planning, landscape architectural and town-planning tasks; a they should have knowledge of natural science, computer technology, information science and technology essential at static and structural design, necessary to satisfy environmental, energy and hygienic requirements, and to plan and control production and construction; a they should have the necessary knowledge of social sciences and organisation to be employed in administration, management and in specialised authorities, and they should have a good command of foreign languages for communication and also to study international technical literature; a they should be able to do research in the fields of theory and practice, and also to participate in educational work. The performance of these tasks requires creativity and high-level artistic and engineering skills, which characterises the profession of architects. By devoting attention to individuals, the Faculty's endeavour is to ensure that all students acquire the highest level of knowledge. The objective is to provide students with expertise to be employed in a wide range of fields, which ensures that they withstand all competition on the employment market. Therefore, the education has a twofold nature: artistic, designing and creative activities are based on stable technical background knowledge, which is reflected by the graduate qualification; "MSc in architecture and architectural engineering".The Faculty's strategy involves continuous improvement of the fields, structure and methods of education in order to adjust them to social requirements and also to follow scientific development, which is promoted by projects carried-out in the Faculty. This strategy includes further development of multiple-level education in foreign languages. Educational programmes on the Faculty are as follows:Basic education: I undergraduate and graduate basic education, a two-level basic education in English (BSc and MSc levels), a education in French. (Education in German is in preparation.)Post-graduate education: a specialised extension courses (specialist engineering training), ! PhD and DLA programmes. On successful completion of studies, students are awarded a university degree, which certifies their competence as architects after the basiceducation, or a degree that certifies accomplishment of a specialised extension course.PhD and DLA programmes form an integral part of educational activities in fields of research related to the Faculty's areas of study. The Faculty's tasks involve conducting proceedings for candidates of Dr. habil. and Mag. habil. degrees as well.Architectural design, scientific research and technical development are important tasks, closely related to education, which jointly create the architectural and engineering image of the Faculty. These activities are proportioned according to the fields of study in individual departments. In terms of equipment and the number of research workers and doctorates, the Faculty is a principal research centre in the fields of architectural and construction science and urban studies, and thus, it has a good working relationship with the MTA (Hungarian Academy of Sciences), with several Hungarian and foreign research and qualification institutes, and many manufacturing and construction firms. By being involved in architectural design and construction, the Faculty maintains a presence in the Association of Architects, in the Chambers of Architecture and Engineering and in standardisation bodies. Moreover, architectural works designed by teachers of the Faculty are to be found all over the country, which also contributes to the Faculty's good reputation.
