The book you hold in your hands is the first in the series Camera Poetica. In 2006, the Finnish and Hungarian editions were published, and it is a pleasure to now present Finland in both English and German. Since many of the poems had not previously been translated into either of these languages, it took some time to prepare the editions. The German edition presents new translations of all the poems, as does the English version except for the poems by Nils-Aslak Valkeapaa. Camera Poetica - what do these Latin words imply? The idea behind Camera Poetica is to pair photography and poetry in such a way that they forge an authentic unison, without sacrificing either their independence or originality. This unity of image and poem resembles an alloy, the components of which can be separated, yet it is precisely in combination that they exhibit not only a new form but, more importantly, a new quality. The various ways in which these image-verse pairs can be created have significance: they can arise independently and then find each other; existing images can trigger poetry, or poems can lead to the production of images; the act of photography and poetry writing can occur simultaneously, whether one or several artists are at work. While the images and poems in Finland originated independently, the second volume in the series, This Beloved Homeland, began with photographs that then inspired verse written by the Saami poet Inger-Mari Aikio-Arianaick (Ima).
