A state with something forevery one of the nearly13 millionpeople who live there and the40 million who visit annually,Florida has Native Americansand cowboys for the morerugged folks, endangered wild-life and exotic fauna for envi-ronmentalists, beaches andtheme parks for leisure lovers, space shuttles and moonlaunchings for the high techminded. And smack in thecenter of the state beams alarge, smiling mouse who isas magic as the kingdom hecalls home. Both the sunny resorts ofthe Sunshine State and thespace age wonders of CapeCanaveral have their roots inFlorida's unique past. The low-lying peninsula that forms thistropical paradise owes itsorigins to fiery volcanoes whichwere protectively enfolded bywater. The land is all part ofthe Floridian Plateau that evennow remains partially sub-merged less than 50 fathomsbeneath the Atlantic Oceanand the Gulf of Mexico. ThePlateau has always reactedcalmly to any geologic move-ment, its gentle rolling motionresulting in but a few hillyregions and a downward "dip"into the Gulf of Mexico.
