The forest has always been renowned for its sacred, secretive silence. And for the wild men and women reputed to live there. But the forest is equally respected as a source of timber, meat and hides of animals, plants and fruit.Johann Georg von Langen (1699 -1776), master of the hunt in the duchy of Brunswick recognized the value of the forest as an economic factor. Langen, who was charged with the task of introducing eco-nomic reforms in the Solling area, planned to establish a porcelain manufactory as early as 1744. The nearby forests were to provide the large quantities of wood required for firing the kilns.
