Who has not imagined the heroes of Homer as creatures of rare virtue, even though touched by some of the vices and virtues of common man? The same has happened with the early Christians. For a long run of centuries, the dramatic event of persecutions has created a rarefied atmosphere uncontaminated by the iniquities of the society of that era: they were courageous heroes who lived by their faith until final martyrdom. Literature has blown waves of emotion and exaltation over their fate: the early Christians soon replaced the ancient Gods of Olympus and the crowd of demi-Gods and Heroes, with Martyrs who were the perfect imitator
