EDITOR'S PREFACE.
We present to the stranger a much needed book. We wish him with its help to become acquainted with our Hungary, as yet so insufficiently known.
If we wish to form a clear idea of Hungary and her people, we cannot content ourselves with looking at natural beauty as presented to our eyes in the country, but also have to learn its cultural valúes and the treasures of its soul. We have therefore not confined ourselves to depicting creations of art, the metropolitan life of Budapest and its fine baths only, or to surveying the ethnographical and historical features of the country, and her world-renowned bathing and health resorts, but have devoted several chapters to following the trend of Hungarian history and sketching the character of national culture.
Hungarian courage has been far-famed Trom time immemorial. Today the Hungarians enlist as soldiers of Culture. In the great world outside, the works of Hungarian scientists, of Hungarian painters and sculptors have rendered famous the name of this small country, the plays of Hungarian authors are performed on the best stages of America and Europe, the music of Hungarian composers rings forth in select concerts or is carried by the wireless to parts far remote, and many times has the Hungarian flag flown on foreign sports grounds to celebrate some fine Hungarian achievement.
