PREFACE In publishing this volume, I am expressing neither agreement nor disagreement with the views of the writers. My purpose is simply to make available for information and research the data contained in the book to opinion-makers, scholars and the general English-speaking public throughout the world. The organization and compilation of this work was undertaken at my initiative by an editorial committee appointed by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences under the chairmanship of Academician Ferenc Erdei. Writers were specially commissioned by the editorial committee to provide an account of the important aspects of Hungarian development and life. The topics range through geography, history, economy, industry, education, science, culture, etc., and the work is lavishly illustrated throughout. This is the Hungarian view of Hungary, and as such the book makes available, for the first time in English between the covers of a single volume, much information on Hungary which has been previously widely scattered or completely inaccessible. It is my sincere hope that this volume will lead to a greater understanding and appreciation of the background and potential of the Hungarian people and their fine and colourful country.
