Jassy, situated at a crossroads, has for centuries beckoned to travellers to stop and investigate. The charm of the "legendary town with illusory outlines" of Topirceanu's poems urges visitors to seek out the old-world buildings, yet alsó to gazé long at the brilliant youth of those recently erected. Jassy the old - Jassy the voung, with its new element, so full of vitality, enfolds you in a dual charm. The other Jassy, though very old - the Jassy of the reign of Alexander the Good (1400-1432) and of the far remoter period when in the second century Claudius Ptolemaeus called it Petrodava - is known to us from the dust-covered hrisoave (muniments). Situated in the middle of the plateau of Moldova, on the terracing of the amphitheatre förmed by seven hills plentifully planted with fine orchards and vineyards, among which the little river Bahlui winds its way, Jassy lies at the crossroads of age-old trade routes. Caravans from the Near East used to pass Jassy on their way to Hungary, Austria and Germany, and alsó those coming from the north, via Poland, on their southward journey.
