Bővebb ismertető
KAROLINSKA INSTITUTET 1810-1960 Karolinska Institutet, the Royal medical school in Stockholm, was founded in 1810. It is an independent medical school, but has the same academic status as the medical faculties of Uppsala, Lund, Göteborg and Umeá. With 45 professors, 24 associate professors, 260 assistant professors, and about 1000 undergraduates-of whom 25 per cent are women - Karolinska Institutet is at present about twiee as large as any of the other medical faculties of Sweden. The country has relatively few doetors, at present about 1 per 1300 inhabitants. Every year, 140 of the 410 students enrolling for medical studies enter Karolinska Institutet. Thus the ratio undergraduates/teachers is low, which is a great advantage as regards training and research work. The period of study required for the preliminary examination (med. kand.) is two years. After a further five or six years of study the lieentiate degree (med. lic.) may be acquired; this entitles the holder to practise medieine. Research and postgraduate studies can be pursued in all fields of medieine, and may lead, by means of a doctoral thesis, to the degree of Doctor of Medieine {med. dr). Foreign research workers may be allowed to pursue medical research in the various departments of the Institute, alsó for the purpose of acquiring the degree of Doctor of Medieine. Karolinska Institutet occupies the Norrbacka district, just beyond the boundary of Stockholm. A highway, Solnavágen, divides the site into a large eastern area and a smaller western one. In the western area are situated most of the twenty-five pre-clinical institutions, while the hospitál units of Karolinska Sjukhuset are to be found in the eastern area. This is the largest training hospitál attached to Karolinska Institutet. The hospitál as projected is not yet completed. In a few years it will have about 2500 beds and will then comprise all clinical and laboratory units. Serafimerlasarettet, situated in the town opposite the Town Hall, was established in 1752 and was made available for the training of medical students only a few years after the foundation of Karolinska Institutet.
