Famous structural chemist. Born in 1915 in "Xiamen, Fujian Province. Forefathers from Tainan, Taiwan Province. Graduated from the Department of Chemistry, Xiamen (Amoy) University in 1934. Studied in England from 1937 to 1939 and received his Ph. D. degree in physical chemistry from the University of London. Later went to the United States to carry on research work on structural chemistry at the Division of Chemistry, California Institute of Technology; and also did outstanding work in the study of combustion and detonation. Returned to China in 1945; taught and held leading posts in Xiamen University from 1946 to 1960 and Fuzhou University from 1960 to 1981. Founded the East China Institute (the present Fujian Institute) of Research on the Structure of Matter in 1960 and was its director from 1960 to 1981 and now is director emeritus. Has made important contributions to the training of scientists, published a number of papers on radiochemistry, structural chemistry and chemical modelling of biological nitrogen fixation, and enjoys high prestige in China and abroad. He is now president of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and member of the Standing Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference;also president of the Chinese Chemistry Society.
