A Business Guide to Denmark Denmark is one of the Scandinavian countries, Europe's oldest monarchy, and although to many outsiders it is seen as »a farming country« the economic structure has changed so significantly in the last four decades that manufacturing (including ships) now provides roughly 75 % of total exports. Country and population Made up of the Jutland peninsular and 406 islands with about 90 of them inhabited by the 5.2 million population (area 43,094 sq.km), the country itself is flat to undulating, and very different from the dramatic mountains and fjords often associated with Scandinavia. The landscape is one of rolling cultivated farmland and forests, often with the sea in the background. Denmark's many islands are scattered across the entrance to the Baltic Sea, and Danish merchants traded along the coasts of the Baltic countries long before the Hanseatic League was formed in the mid-14th century. The long west coast of Jutland faces the North Sea. The Kingdom of Denmark also includes the Faroe Islands (18 islands with an area of 1,399 sq.km. and a population of 47,500 in the North Atlantic) and Greenland (area 2,175,600 sq.km and a population of 55,000 even further north). Both of these territories have home rule, and both have chosen not to join the European Union, although Denmark joined the EC in 1972. Denmark's capital, Copenhagen, covers much of the eastern part of Zealand, the largest island, and houses about a fourth of the national population. Other main centres are Aarhus (population 205,000), Odense (142,000), Aalborg (115,000) and Esbjerg (72,000). The Faroese capital, Torshavn on the largest island, Streymoy, has almost one-third of the Faroese population, and Greenland's capital Nuuk (Godthaab) about one-fifth of Greenland's population. The Danish population is homogenous compared to many European countries, with (1993) 180,000 resident foreign nationals, of which 24,000 were from other Nordic countries. More than 90 per cent are recorded as members of the Danish Protestant (Lutheran Evangelical) church, although there are some 24 other recognized religious denominations. Culture while a country's cultural activities are difficult to measure statistically, Denmark has about 40 daily newspapers, two terrestrial and one satellite TV service, three national (licence-financed) radio channels and about 330 local radio and 55 local TV stations. In 1993, there were 594,000 subscribers to hybrid net TV and 570,000 households with a parabolic dish to receive TV. In addition to the daily and Sunday newspapers, over 330 district newspapers, 160 journals and periodicals and 38 general interest magazines are published regularly. About 10,000 new book titles were published in 1992, including 869 books for primary schools, 1,296 children's books, and almost 2,000 works of fiction. Of the total, 2,400 were translations from other languages, the bulk of these (1,500) from English. More than 75 million books were lent by the 249 public libraries during the year, and a further 2.7 million by the 173 research libraries. Denmark's 171 cinemas sold 8.6 million tickets in 1992, and i f
