T vp.ningrarl the cradle of the Great October Revolution, well deserves the honour of bearing Lenin's name. Its streets and squares are a live chronicle of glorious deeds: every building here is a memorial, every stone a bit of history. From the Neva, the cruiser Aurora fired the shot that gave the signal for attack on the night of October 25th (November 7th) 1917, and the sound called an echo throughout the world. It was here, in Leningrad, that the Soviet Government's first decrees on peace and land were issued.By request of the working people of Petrograd, the city was renamed Leningrad in January 1924, and this is what was said in the resolution of the Second Congress of Soviets of the U.S.S.R. "Red Petrograd is the cradle of proletarian revolution. The workers of Petrograd have rendered invaluable service to our Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. And it was here in Petrograd that the great events of October 1917 which decided the future of our country took place."
